International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide on 8 of March every year to bring global attention to issues like gender equality, physical abuse against women, reproductive rights and to address the overall universal female suffrage. The day also aims to celebrate women achievements in different fields of social, economic, cultural, and political arenas around the world.
A day that signifies different things to women in different phases and circumstances of their lives. For some, it is about freedom of heart and spirit while for others it is still about getting equal opportunities.
In the words of Melody Lee,
“Don’t tell a girl with fire in her veins and hurricane bones
what she should and shouldn’t do. In the blink of an eye, she will shatter your ridiculous cage
you attempt to build around her beautiful bohemian spirit.”
Every woman can identify with the above beautifully written piece of work. Why is any woman told what to do or what not to do. Every individual be it a man, woman, girl or boy needs respect and support to grow. Women have been deprived of this basic necessity since decades. They are considered subordinates, incapable and unworthy. Men are, by default, the bread earners of the family, the social bias are enormous and pressurizing for every gender because of which women have to prove their worth at every step. The home is their responsibility in every part of the world and if they are working, it is still expected that they will do justice to their “Primary” responsibility.
“Gender Equality” was also the theme of 2023 Women’s Day celebration and has been a pain point of every lady for a long time. However, many feel that we have moved past the commonly used words of “Women Empowerment” and “Women Equality” in today’s world. As more and more people are getting educated and aware, they are respectful about the problems being faced by the other gender and are accepting each other irrespective of the differences. Men are giving more power to women and sharing responsibilities. Hence, the line separating the two genders is blurring. The fight today has become more about the freedom of one’s soul, a free being. We need peace of the heart and head. We need freedom from our own negativities which are taking us down. So, it is no longer the gender inequality rather a fight within oneself which we have to conquer.
International Women’s Day is an important day of the year for many individuals. We need to decide if we still have to fight each other or master our own inner evil. This women’s day, I wish everyone freedom, be it in internal or external. Let us be victorious and fight it together!
